The muezzin’s adhan had faded and in its place returned the more serene and gentle sounds that Brian so often enjoyed from his second-story balcony overlooking Carlton Gardens. Life never seemed to stop in the sixty-plus acre park at the edge of the Carlton business district. Regardless of the time of day, a symphony of children’s voices and laughter could be heard ascending from the playground, up through the tree-top canopy, to remind the city that innocence still exists. Cool sea breezes invading the city from Port Phillip would often set the leaves of the park dancing and the resident birds and squirrels would invariably join the celebration. Looking out over the park during his morning reading time, Brian couldn’t remember a day in which he was ungrateful for the care shown by the mission agency in securing this apartment for him upon his relocation from the States in the weeks following “the cleansing.”

This particular day would be different. Brian’s morning routine of reading from the Scriptures over a cup of Earl Grey had been irreparably disrupted by the cryptic letter written by a friend he hadn’t heard from in three years. The Acts account of the formation of the Philippian church simply couldn’t grab his attention the way this one sentence from Ten-stroke had. Surrounded on his balcony by nature’s mysteriously choreographed performance of sight, sound, and smell, Brian Denning’s mind slowly flooded with a river of memories flowing out of the headwaters of a classroom debate twelve years earlier on the campus of Bethel Theological Seminary.
